The eight season moves into the 1970s, with DCI George Gently facing retirement. In the opening episode Gently discovers the victim's wife was convicted of the murder eight years ago, he decides to re-open the case; a controversial move. But DI Bacchus opposes Gently's decision, not least because he worked as a DS on the original investigation and putting mentor and protégé at complete odds.

Garrow is alone and grieving. Lady Sarah has left him, and he can no longer turn to Southouse for counsel. Persuaded by Southouse's nephew George to defend a man falsely accused of murder, Garrow discovers a cover-up and puts himself in grave danger.

Garrow defends two Spitalfield silk weavers accused of destroying looms, an act of industrial sabotage. When on testifies against the other, the case becomes more complicated. Lady Sarah confronts Sir Arthur, and Southouse takes ill.

When members of a syndicate owning a prize racehorse are killed in a helicopter crash, Leo and Harry investigate a complex betting scam.

Harry is called to investigate the death of Dawn Pivcevic, who seemingly drowned in a paddling pool containing three inches of water.

Nikki's investigation takes an unexpected turn when she reaches January House Care Centre and finds that Morrie has tried to commit suicide.

When her grandmother passes away, Nikki begins to have doubts about her profession. Meanwhile, the team investigates a series of brutal and apparently entirely motiveless murders - and a killer who seemingly needs to look his victims in the face as they die. Harry investigates the death of a woman who appears to have drowned in three inches of water - with no obvious suspect to apportion blame.
