Each June, Pride Month celebrates LGTBQIA+ pride and honors the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts. Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or ***/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that LGBTQIA+ individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally. LGBTQIA+ is an acronym that brings together many different gender and sexual identities that often face marginalization across society. It stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual/aromantic/agender, and the + holds space for the expanding and new understanding of different parts of the very diverse gender and sexual identities. The “A" in LGBTQIA+ may also refer to “ally" or “allied," meaning someone who does not identify as LGBTQIA+ but supports those who do.
