Description
Book 1 of a trilogy of saga of the Lu family of Shanghai, set in during the Mao era focusing on the 60's and 70's, highlighting the disastrous Cultural Revolution. This volume reflect the history of Shanghai under the reign of Mao. The story follows the families of two Lu brothers who exhibit their typical Shanghainese way of wheeling and dealing, while their women ached to adopt Western ways of independence but still unable to shed their traditional roles.
