Description
At 11:03 P.M. on a cool night in May, a teenage foster child named Anlya Paulson plummets to her death from the overpass above San Francisco's Stockton tunnel. But did she fall...or was she pushed? Rushing to produce a convictable suspect in the glare of the media spotlight, homicide inspector's focus their attention on a likeable but naive young man named Greg Treadway. Greg is a middle school teacher and he volunteers as a special advocate for foster children. At first, the only thing connecting him to Anlya's death is the fact that they shared a meal earlier that night. But soon enough, elements of that story seem to fall apart, and Rebecca Hardy, now an associate at her father's law firm, finds herself drawn into the young man's defense. As the case rushes forward to trial, Dismas and Rebecca find themselves battling not only an aggressive prosecutor and a disinterested police department, but their own client, who isn't faring well in jail and insists on going to trial immediately. With little time to investigate alternative theories of the case, Rebecca fears that her first outing as lead counsel in a homicide case will end in disaster. But when a dying woman's last words cast a surprising new light on the evidence and problems develop with a key witness, Rebecca and Dismas begin to glimpse the intricate web that connects a dead African-American girl to the complex political and judicial machine that runs San Francisco. Proving it in court, however, won't be so easy.
