Description
The stark eroded lands and canyons between the lower reaches of the Pecos and Devils rivers have harbored human populations for at least nine thousand years. The canyon dwellers' creative spirit embellished the walls of the rock shelters with mysterious, striking and colorful imagery. World authorities on cave art place Lower Pecos rock paintings among the most important in the Western Hemisphere. Ancient Texans is the fascinating story of these paintings and the people who created them. It features dozens of photographs of the best-preserved examples of the canyon paintings. Well-known photographer Jim Zintgraff has devoted many years to recording the artistic accomplishments of these ancient Texans, and his brilliant work permits an intimate, firsthand view. Special essays by a panel of authorities provide insights on the significance of the captivating Lower Pecos rock art. They explore its possible parallels to the rock paintings of Australian and South African hunter-gatherers, the scientific detective work behind the reconstruction of ancient environments and human diets, and the findings from important excavations in the area.--Cover
