She taught others to read and write, and served as a laundress, nurse, and teacher with an Army troop of African-American soldiers. Taylor's own words are supplemented by facts about the events she witnessed, the people she met, and the places to which she traveled.

A groundbreaking figure in every sense of the word, Susie King Taylor (1848-1912) was one of the first Black nurses during the Civil War, tending to the wounded soldiers of the 1st South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment.
